Moving to Oregon
When moving to Oregon you will quickly discover a remarkable land of great changes. From the rugged Oregon seacoast, to the high mountain passes of the Oregon Cascades and in the stony lava beds and Ponderosa pines of the high desert, Oregon's natural beauty is here for all to enjoy. Oregon is located in the Pacific Northwest area of the U.S. and ranks 10th in size among the 50 states. It had land borders with Washington to the north, Idaho to the east and California and Nevada to the south. Its western border meets the beautiful Pacific Ocean, and is home to one of the most diverse climates of any U.S. state, with desert, glaciers and prairies to large forests in the north and south of the state.

Capital City: Salem is the capital city of Oregon.

Population: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 3.8 million reside in Oregon.

Local Activities: Hike in the early morning along the Oregon coast and watch for whales. Enjoy the solitude of miles and miles of Oregon's public beaches. Tour the historic Columbia River Highway and see the magnificent vistas and waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge. Immerse yourself in the outdoors in our high desert region, where snow sports, water sports, hiking, camping and hunting are favorite activities. Oregon's wilderness areas, national forests and Crater Lake, Oregon's national park are all favorite recreation destinations.

Economy: Oregon's natural resources have formed the basis of its economy from the state's very beginning. Immense forests have made lumber and wood products the leading industry in the state. Since World War II, however, the state has striven to diversify its job base. The aluminum industry is attracted to Oregon, along with computer and electronics firms, which now constitute the fastest growing manufacturing sector. If you are thinking of moving to Oregon for work, you will be happy to know that the average personal income per capita in is just over $32,000 and the total state income was around $117.5 billion. The largest private employers in the state are employed by the manufacturing, retail, construction and professional and technical services sectors. The area is well known for its high technology companies. In particular, the area near Portland, known as Silicon Forest, is home to a cluster of hi-tech companies; the largest of these companies is Intel. Although the region was hit hard after thedot com bubble burst, it has since recovered and has recently been targeted by biotech companies moving to Oregon for the local high tech resources. Other large and well-known employers outside of IT include FLIR systems, a leading defense and Electronics Company and Nike, the worldwide sports brand.
