Eugene, Oregon

What do people look for in a city when relocating? For some, it’s low crime rates and good schools; for others, it’s a healthy job market and stable economy, and still for others, its affordable housing, coupled with abundant recreational and entertainment opportunities. People who want all these should consider moving to Eugene, Oregon. Located in the southern Willamette Valley where the Willamette and McKenzie rivers meet, Eugene offers the amenities of a big city and family-friendly atmosphere of a college town. Eugene consistently ranks high in livability due to its walkable communities, scenic outdoors, vibrant downtown, year-round recreational offerings, thriving arts and culture scene and excellent educational and medical institutions. That’s more than enough reason to start calling Eugene moving companies right away.

Economy:
The county seat of Lane County, Eugene covers approximately 41.5 square miles and is home to over 140,000 residents. Median home price is $254,250, while median household income is $37,328. The economy of Eugene thrives on industries and small- and medium-sized businesses. There are more than 10,000 businesses within the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area, most of which are homegrown enterprises. Local businesses in Eugene typically employ fewer than 20 workers. Majority of employment in Lane County is found in the manufacturing, retail trade, healthcare and social assistance sectors. Eugene’s biggest employers are the University of Oregon, the local government, public school system and the Sacred Heart Medical Center. People are moving to Eugene to take up jobs in hospitals, clinics and outpatient services, trauma centers and mail order retailing. The City of Eugene has drafted an ambitious economic development plan to create 20,000 new jobs, reduce local unemployment and increase the average wage by 2020. In addition, the government has strengthened efforts to encourage local business and entrepreneurs and promote a culture of re-investment into the local community.

History:
The city is named after its founder, Eugene Franklin Skinner, who came to Oregon with his wife Mary and their infant daughter in 1846, and built the first cabin in what is now Eugene. Skinner’s cabin became a general trading post and was subsequently authorized as a post office in 1850. Skinners farmed on their property and operated a ferry service on the Willamette River. In 1852, Skinner and Judge David M. Risdon laid out the town and named it after Skinner. Soon after, settlers and merchants started moving to Eugene to build saw mills, general stores, blacksmith shops, saloons and hotels. By 1858, the population of Eugene had grown to about 600 inhabitants. Eugene was incorporated as a city in 1862, while its first city council was elected in 1865. The city became a stagecoach stop in 1865 with the arrival of the Territorial Railroad. The completion of the Oregon-California Railway in 1871 brought renewed prosperity and more settlers to Eugene. The University of Oregon was founded in 1876 and today remains a premiere institution of higher education and one of Eugene’s largest employers.

Tourism:
Calling itself the “World’s Greatest City of the Arts and Outdoors,” Eugene embodies the scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest: majestic rivers, thousands of acres of open space, mild temperatures year-round. Those moving to Eugene are advised to pack their bicycles so they can ride around town and along the river paths on the city’s miles and miles of bicycle paths and cycling trails. Another healthy way to soak in the spectacular beauty of Eugene is to walk or jog along the city’s extensive network of running trails. Eugene’s world-class arts and cultural attractions include everything from the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, which plays host to seven performing arts resident companies, to the Saturday Market, where one can catch local performers and artisans. Downtown is where this environmentally and socially aware city comes alive, with its wide selection of shops, restaurants, art galleries and craft breweries to satisfy every taste and inclination.
