Bend, Oregon

Bend, Oregon is located in the north west on the Pacific seaboard. It is the most densely populated city in Central Oregon and is the seat of Deschutes County; and forms a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geographically, Bend is located on the banks of the Deschutes River, at a high altitude on the edge of the Cascade Range, with desert vegetation as its eastern border and the Ponderosa Pine forests to the west. Those moving to Bend will also discover a mild and dry climate.

Economy:
According to statistics released by the United States Census Bureau, Bend has a total land area of 32 square miles and a population, counted in mid 2009, of 76,621 – a massive increase since 2000 of 47.3 percent. 2,393 citizens live per square mile, thus Bend is designated as being a city of low population density. The Central Oregon District Hospital, Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Mountain View Hospital and St Charles Medical Center serve the city’s medical needs; while Roberts Field, Bend Municipal Airport, D M Stevenson Ranch Airport, Gopher Gulch Airport, Inspiration Airport, Juniper Air Park Airport, Kennel Airstrip Airport, Pilot Butte Airport and Sundance Meadows Airport provide air transport connections. There is an Amtrak station in the city.

One of the main reasons for the dramatic increase in the city’s population is that Bend has become a retirement city and the healthcare and social services sectors have therefore become two of the largest employers in the city.

History:
Up until the early 1900s when European settlers arrived in the area, the region now known as Bend was the territory of Native Americans. Originally named Farewell Bend, its name was changed to simple Bend when, in 1905, it was officially incorporated as a city.

Tourism:
The biggest draw card for tourists to Bend – besides it beautiful setting – are the city’s premier facilities for skiing in winter; and kayaking, white water rafting and fishing; golfing, its hiking and biking trails and camping sites.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • There is an extinct volcano within Bend’s city limits – the only other two cities in the United States to have the same claim are Jackson in Mississippi and Portland in Oregon.
  • Bend is twinned with three sister cities – Muzaffarabad in Pakistan, Condega in Nicaragua and Fujioka in Japan.
