Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The largest city in the state, Oklahoma City is located in the center of Oklahoma. With more than a million people calling the area home, Oklahoma City offers a diverse landscape of hip, urban culture and charming, old-fashioned neighborhoods for visitors and residents alike. A redefined city, Oklahoma City's spirited environment blends with its deep western heritage to create a place where culture and commerce blossom. The city’s renowned festivals, national sporting events and a variety of districts highlighting arts and entertainment, the potential for adventure in Oklahoma City is truly boundless.

History:
During the 1800s, the U.S. government forcibly moved Indian tribes from around the country into the area known as Oklahoma Territory. There was a parcel of land never given over to any tribe. This area was known as the “Unassigned Lands.” In the 1880s, many frontier Americans wished to move into this area and onto this land. Soon, landless pioneers began moving into the designated area without authorization. The "Boomers," was the nickname given to those who forced the government into opening the territory up to homesteaders. The Boomers won, and by 1900, the population had doubled. In 1910, with a population of nearly 64,000, a petition was started to move the state capitol from Guthrie to Oklahoma City. With enough signatures, there was a popular vote, and Oklahoma City became the home of the new state capital. In 1928, oil was discovered for the first time in Oklahoma City. In the 27 days before the great gusher could be capped, it spewed over 110,000 barrels of oil. More importantly, the Oklahoma City Field had been discovered. This created the city's newest and most important financial resource, and turned Oklahoma City into the world's newest boomtown. Today, oil continues to play a significant part of the city's economy.

Economy:
In its early days, oil dominated the city’s economy. Today, those moving to Oklahoma City will discover a broad range of businesses and employers. Agriculture, aviation, energy, government, manufacturing and health care all play significant roles in the city's economic standing. There are numerous regional federal agency offices located in Oklahoma City. The government sector accounts for nearly 20 percent of Oklahoma City’s non-agricultural employment. The health care industry provides an important economic boost to the city, as do companies like Tinker Air Force Base. The largest industrial operation in Oklahoma City, Tinker serves the US Air Force as a repair depot, providing logistic services for the US Air Force throughout the world. Tinker employs about 26,000 military and civilian. There is also a mounting high technology sector in the Oklahoma City economy, with over 400 companies working in the fields of information technology, high technology and software development.

Tourism:
Check out the Oklahoma City Zoo is a fully accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Association of Museums as both a living museum and a botanical garden. The zoo participates in several cooperative species survival plan, and is dedicated to the preservation of endangered wildlife. Events and concerts at the famous Ford Center have always played a large part in Oklahoma City tourism. Attracting major music acts, and Oklahoma City’s sports teams, there’s always something big happening at the Ford Center. One of the most popular attractions in Oklahoma City is the Myriad Botanical Gardens and Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. This exhibit lets you explore the plant life and cultures of six countries including South Africa, Thailand, Belize, Madagascar, Australia and Mexico. Explore the historic Bricktown District, which hosts over 10 million visitors annually, making it a huge part of Oklahoma City tourism. Residents and visitors enjoy things such as Big 12 sports, nightlife, live music, clubs, restaurants, baseball games, movies, block parties, street performers and much more.
