History:
The County of Onslow was founded in 1731 from New Hanover. The city was named in honour of the speaker of the House of Commons in the British Parliament, Arthur Onslow. In the early times the Court would hold its sessions in different locations as there were frequent natural accidents of storms and fires. A new court house was built at Wantland’s Ferry and the first session was held here in July 1757. The town of Jacksonville was authorized in 1842 and named after President Andrew Jackson. The town itself was laid out in 1849. In 1940, Camp Lejeune was established in Onslow by the Military. Population doubled in a few days as hundreds began moving to Jacksonville to seek contracts for defence projects. Today about half of the population lives on Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station.
