Raleigh, North Carolina

Founded as the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh was created by politics. Since the formation of the nearby Research Triangle Park in 1959, the city has transformed as a center for technological innovation. Raleigh is also a popular moving destination where a continuous flood of new workers has almost doubled the population in the last 20 years. Regarded as one of the nation's fastest-growing cities, Raleigh is also renowned for its mild climate, low cost of living, easy pace and friendly demeanor.

History:
In 1792, Raleigh was created to be North Carolina's capital. To appreciate this exceptionally blessed city, one must consider the history and charmingly complex composition of the state that created the City of Raleigh. One of the original 13 colonies, North Carolina was the first to officially proclaim independence, with the Halifax Resolves in 1776. An area of yeoman farmers and among the South's first industrial cities, North Carolina was no home place to the gentry, but rather a state of working men and women who valued education and established the nation's first state university. North Carolina's admiration of education has helped create a notable public school system and the nation's best community college system. Though affected by the strains of the 1920s, North Carolina invested in a statewide network of paved roads, and became known as "the good roads state," recognizing that the lifeline of economic growth was a statewide transportation network. That diverse composition of people that love freedom, the gritty work ethic and esteem for education, has combined to create the robust environment that is North Carolina's capital city.

Economy:
Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Research Triangle Park area, consistently rank among the nation's most stable economies every year. Unemployment in the city remains low and per capita income remains high. Wake County's biggest industries are virtually recession proof, and include government, education and healthcare. Although the region has felt a bit of the pinch of the nation's economic downturn, many factors point to Raleigh's sustained fiscal health. Several high technology and medical corporations have been attracted to the Raleigh-Durham area due to its outstanding educational and research facilities at area universities, such as North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Nearby Research Triangle Park is one of the leading centers for high-technology research and development in the US. Approximately 140 corporate, government and academic agencies in the Park employ more than 38,000 workers and provide an annual payroll of over $2 billion. Business is thriving in Raleigh, both as companies move into the area and through the expansion of local enterprises. The city has also witnessed the growth of lower-technology, and highly specialized, new manufacturing companies that create complicated machinery and electronic parts. With excellent road, rail and air transportation systems, Raleigh is a budding distribution center.

Tourism:
When looking for the thrill and attractions of a big city, combined with the affordability, accessibility and appeal of a classic Southern town, look no further than Raleigh, North Carolina. Best known for its excellent museums, historic sites, Broadway shows and live concerts, professional and amateur sporting events, Greater Raleigh truly offers a variety of entertainment all in one relaxing, scenic setting. Raleigh is also home of the biggest research park in the country in Research Triangle Park. Travelers recognize the park as the research and high-tech hub of the South, and more than 45,000 full-time employees benefit from the park on a daily basis. Experience the many parks and universities surrounding the city of Raleigh, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park. Four blocks of the city’s downtown buildings has been refurbished into a stylish pedestrian mall. Spend some time taking in some of Raleigh's many museums and galleries, including the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Art.
