Charlotte, North Carolina

Are you a sucker for Southern hospitality but long for a cosmopolitan city with cultural flare?  Then Charlotte, North Carolina is the place for you.  In 2008, Charlotte received the high honor of being named “The Best Place to Live in America.” It is the largest city in North Carolina and is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains.  Charlotte’s location in the United States is between Atlanta, GA and Washington DC. The metro area of Charlotte is laid out in a grid formation making it easy to get around. It's no wonder why people are moving to Charlotte!

Economy:
Charlotte is known as one of the best cities to launch a new business. The city’s real estate market is one of the most undervalued in the country. Charlotte is well respected as a major banking city. It is the headquarters for Bank of America which has more assets than any other bank in the United States. Many Fortune 500 companies are also based in Charlotte like Lowe’s, Nucor Steel, Goodrich, Sonic Automotive and Family Dollar. Other major companies who call Charlotte home are Time Warner Cable, LendingTree and Coca-Cola Consolidated – the beverage giant’s second largest bottler. Charlotte’s economy is growing more than twice as fast as the average city’s. It is easy to see why Charlotte moving companies are so busy.

Tourism:
This rich financial city is also rich in culture and activity. Go on a wild rafting adventure at the US National Whitewater Center. Take in a Broadway caliber show at the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center or take your kids to see a production at the Children’s Theater of Charlotte.  Another great family outing is the Carowinds amusement park. One of the most popular Charlotte spots is Discovery Place – known as one of the best science museums in the country. Take a breather at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens and experience the glorious 110 acres of plants and flowers. Last but certainly not least is NASCAR. Charlotte is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the city hosts the famous Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

History:
The city of Charlotte began when Thomas Polk decided to settle with his family and built a home where two Native American trading routes came together. His nephew, James K. Polk later became our country’s 11th President.  The city was then known as Charlotte Town and was incorporated in 1768.  Even in the early days, this banking Mecca saw prosperity due to material riches. Gold was first discovered there in 1799. Less than 200 years later, a sharp business man by the name of Hugh McColl began to take the North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) to the place where it is today.  In the 1970s Mr. McColl aggressively began taking over other banks to become NationsBank. Through additional growth this bank became what is known today as the Bank of America.

Interesting Facts:
• There are over 40 public golf courses in Charlotte.
• In 1799 a 12-year-old boy found a gold rock that weighed 17 pounds.  His family kept it for three years until a jeweler determined that it was gold and they sold it to him for only $3.50!
• Charlotte’s 34 mile Lake Norman is the largest manmade lake in the United States.
