Economy:
The widespread downturn in the economy since the 2008 crisis has affected Gastonia and unemployment figures released in 2010 show a rate of 9.6 percent, although manufacturing remains one of the powerhouses of the economy of the region.

The Parkdale Mills textile company, a large corporation which maintains its international headquarters in Gastonia, is one of the largest employers in the area but this company has also downsized and moved some of its operations abroad. A number of manufacturing enterprises remain in Gastonia, mainly in the fields of tooling and engineering. The city of Gastonia and local government, the education and healthcare systems and retail operation are the largest employers in Gastonia. History:
In 1877, during the Reconstruction Era, the population of Gastonia was around 200 inhabitants who decided to incorporate the village, which continued to grow and, by 1900, had a population of over 4,600. These folk were mainly employed at the cotton mills which were the driving force of the economy of the area at that time. Gastonia was made County Seat in 1909 and by 1911 all the official buildings of the county had been relocated to the city.

Tourism:
Gastonia is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast with a mountainous geography and a large green and open countryside. Within the 5,096 acre Crowders Mountain State Park is Kings Pinnacle at 1,690’ and Crowder’s Mountain at 1,625’ for mountaineers and rock climbers; miles of biking and hiking trails and acres of forests. East of the city on the Catawba River is the world class US National Whitewater Center. The Schiele Museum of Natural History and its planetarium; and the 110 acre Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden should both not be missed.
