Durham, North Carolina

Durham, North Carolina boasts a colorful and entrepreneurial community and is the proud home of Duke and North Carolina Central Universities—also known as Research Triangle Park. Durham occupies a prime location in the heart of North Carolina and is a hub for learning, creativity and research. Whether you are a resident or just decided on moving to Durham, you will the areas active and vibrant community, which results in the city’s consistently being ranked as one of the top places to live in the U.S. Rich in its history, modern in its activities and flooded in a cosmopolitan light, Durham is known as a community where it is easy to work, easy to play and perfect to live.

History:
Durham was incorporated in 1853. The town grew slowly before the Civil War, however, things quickly picked up following the war. Much of the growth was attributed to the establishment of a thriving tobacco industry. With its milder flavor than other tobacco varieties, Green's tobacco company became a big hit among soldiers of the time. W.T. Blackwell would later collaborate with Mr. Green, and rename the company the "Bull Durham Tobacco Company." While the tobacco industry dominated the city, the city was again helped by the establishment of multiple textile mills throughout the city, predominantly in East and West Durham. Nonetheless, Durham's fortunes declined during the mid-20th century. Textile mills began closing in the 1930s, and competition from other tobacco companies reduced revenues to Durham's tobacco industry. Durham's growth began to revive during the 1980s, with the construction of multiple housing developments in the southern part of the city experienced the beginnings of downtown revitalization. Later, a new downtown baseball stadium was constructed for the Durham Bulls in 1994.

Economy:
Durham's versatile appeal was born from its diversity. Durham's economic base is firmly established upon high-technology industries such as computer, biopharmaceutical, telecommunications and electronics, as evidenced by some of its largest employers. The expansion of Durham's economic base strongly correlates with the growth and development of the world-renowned Research Triangle Park, the largest and most successful planned research and development park in the country. Hundreds of other business opportunities have resulted from "spin-off" enterprises formed to provide for or service the many companies operating in the Park. The state's biotechnology and microelectronics centers, also located in Durham County, improve the supply of intellectual and technical assets and resources available to business. Known as The City of Medicine USA, Durham offers a wide spectrum of medical facilities, personnel and services. Indeed, nearly one in three workers in the labor force works in a health or medical related industry. Attracted by the influence of the major medical centers, the Duke University School of Medicine, the ongoing medical research and the growing clinical opportunities; medical doctors are abundant.

Tourism:
Attractions in the city include symphony concerts, jazz festivals, art exhibitions and numerous cultural exhibitions, including the Full-Frame Documentary Film Festival and the American Dance Festival. A center of Durham's culture is its Carolina Theater, which plays for visitors both live performances and independent films. Dining establishments are primarily located in the Ninth Street and University Drive areas, as well as in and around the downtown area—including several new restaurants in the American Tobacco District. Visit the Nasher Museum of Art and experience nationally recognized traveling exhibitions of innovative global, contemporary art. There is a wealth and variety of nightlife in the city to satisfy just about anyone. Be sure to check out All People’s Grill that features live blues every Saturday night, or spend some time exploring Arnie’s Place, which offers billiards, a bar and grill and karaoke. The Blayloc Café is a martini bar serving pizza, soups and sandwiches, and the Broad Street Café offers up steamy lattes and cheesecake by the slice.
