History:
The area now known as East Elmhurst was originally colonised in the 1650s, when it was named Middleburg. The settlement was renamed New Towne in 1662 and then shortened to simply Newtown. In 1898, Queens was made a part of New York City and Newtown again changed it name, this time to Elmhurst.

East Elmhurst was formally established in 1905 when frame houses were built to accommodate the growing population of immigrants arriving in the area.

The modern history of the city – the 1950s and 1960s – is based on music. Many great African American musicians, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Heath, Frankie Lymon, Charlie Shavers, Ella Fitzgerald and Harry Belafonte all lived in East Elmhurst. The civil rights leader, Malcolm X; Willie Mays, the baseball legend; and the American poet Langston Hughes all called the city home.

The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center and The Black Heritage Reference Center, a part of Queens Library, houses a huge collection of the art and literature of the African American community.The branch of Queens Public Library in East Elmhurst is home to Louis Armstrong's personal papers.
