Corona, New York

Corona, also known as the “Crown of Queens” being part of the borough of the same name, is a densely-populated neighborhood of New York City. Those moving to Corona will also enjoy living very close to the “Big Apple” to enjoy everything it has on offer, and then you can leave and be back home in no time at all!

History:
The name “Corona” is believed to originate from the crown emblem used by the Crown Building Company that developed the area originally. “Corona” is the Italian word for “crown” recalling the many Italians who settled in the area on arrival in America. The Italian American and African American ethnic groups remained in the majority in Corona until the mid-twentieth century when they were succeeded by a rapid influx of Dominicans. Then, in the last decade of the 20th century, further large influxes of Hispanic speaking arrived from other parts of South America. In more recent years, a number of Asian Americans have settled in Corona too. As a consequence, Corona now has a rich blend of cultures and languages making up the population of this metropolis.

Economy:
Corona’s economy is intertwined with that of New York City. The “Big Apple’s” power outstrips that of many nations around the globe due to its sheer size and influence. It ranks number one in the U. S. and is second only to Tokyo, Japan, on a world scale. In terms of listed entities, New York’s Stock Exchange is the world’s largest stock market by market capitalization. By way of financial contribution to the coffers, tourism, insurance, finance and banking, health care, real estate and law rate among the main players of New York’s economy. Journalism has played a vital role in developing New York as a major and important center for publishing and mass media programming in the U. S. More recent entries to the economy have been the advertising sector, architecture and fashion, but many more will no doubt come on board and help diversify the city’s economy and protect it through volatile market cycles.

Tourism:
If you are a first-time visitor to Corona, a trip to the Black Heritage Reference Center of Queens County is recommended. Here you will find among many other interesting artifacts:

  • The Schomburg Clippings File – an extensive microfiche collection covering all aspects of community living in the area over many years.
  • The Black Heritage Video Collection – documenting the history and culture of African-Americans on video tapes.

If you are more into conventional sightseeing tourism when you arrive in New York City, the five boroughs of the City double as home to some of the world’s most cherished landmarks and attractions which include The Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The good news is that all of these tourist hot spots are easily accessed from Corona too.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Singer and songwriter of Simon and Garfunkel fame, Paul Simon was born in Corona.
  • Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Madonna and Dizzy Gillespie were also born in Corona.
