Binghamton, New York

Binghamton, New York is a city that is alive with economic activity and thriving businesses. Those moving to Binghamton will also discover that it is a comfortable residential neighborhood.

Economy:

The city is alive with economic activity and thriving business. A number of very important companies operate here. The manufacturing industry is the largest employer, the largest earner and the main influence in the economy. Downtown Binghamton is a bustling hub of activity. There are many malls and shopping areas and along with a number of independent speciality shops. The major employers in the area include Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, IBM, Endicott Interconnect, McIntosh, Universal Instruments, AIG and Gannett. As the majority of the population are single workers, moving companies in Binghamton have business all year round. People moving to Binghamton usually stay for short spans of time; this has kept housing prices very reasonable. Families moving in for long-term can benefit greatly from this fact.

History:

The city was originally incorporated as a village in 1834. It was named after William Bingham, a wealthy banker and landowner of the 1780s. Bingham provided the impetus for creating a settlement at the meeting point of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers. The village was incorporated as a city in 1867. The Bundy Manufacturing Company, established in 1889, was one of the main pioneers in the industry of the city. Initially producing only clocks, the company saw several mergers and expansions and name changes until 1914 when it hired Thomas Watson. Under the corporate leadership of Watson the company was finally named International Business Machines, better known today by its acronym IBM. Since its success and eventual evolution into a corporate giant, IBM has become Binghamton’s leading employer. Another major development came when Edwin A. Link developed a flight simulator during the Great Depression. From that initial start, the company has become a global leader in training pilots and aviation crew. Today Binghamton has a thriving business community.

Tourism:

Binghamton is often referred to as the “Carousel Capital of the World.” In the 1930s, a person called George F. Johnson donated six antique carousels to local parks. The carousels are available to the public for rides at no charge from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The carousels are on the New York State Historic Register and the National Register for Historic Places. Other attractions include the Ross Park Zoo, the fifth oldest zoo in the United States. The nearby place of Vestal is home to the Kopernik Observatory which is the largest public observatory in the northeast.
