Santa Fe, New Mexico

The capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe, is a city unlike any other. Situated in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the city provides breathtaking views and a wealth of outdoor activities making it popular tourist and moving destination. Designated as a UNESCO Creative City, Santa Fe showcases its rich history and its multicultural character through different fields of art. The city is also a center for science and technology being home to the Santa Fe Institute, a well-known research institution. People moving to Santa Fe will soon find themselves in a city that celebrates its past, its present and its future.

Economy:
Santa Fe's economy has been based largely on tourism and state government. As the capital of New Mexico, the government is the largest employer in the area. Because of the city's proximity to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), scientific research has also become a factor. Operated by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy, LANL is one of the largest research laboratories in the nation. Health care and light manufacturing are other significant economic sectors. Santa Fe has emerged as a regional medical center; St. Vincent Regional Medical Center is one of the city's largest employers and serves seven counties. Products manufactured by local companies include electronic instruments and textiles.

History:
Santa Fe was established in 1515 as the capital of Nuevo Mexico and recognized as a province of Spain. The city continued to serve as the capital for Spain until the Mexican War of Independence began in 1810. In 1824 the city was established as the capital of the Mexican territory known as Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico.
The government of the United States declared war with Mexico in 1846. The city was taken over by an American army and Santa Fe along with the entire New Mexico Territory was claimed by the United States. In 1848 the region officially became part of the United States due to the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Tourism:
The city is a major tourist area, especially the historic downtown which includes the prominent Santa Fe Plaza. The town is well known as a primary center for museums as well as the arts, especially Canyon Road.

Interesting architecture and sculptures can be seen all over the town. The area is also well known for its beautiful scenery and active nightlife scene.
