Newark, New Jersey

The financial, commercial and transportation heart of the Garden State, Newark, New Jersey is a flourishing cultural hub, filled with opportunity for new residents and visitors alike. Home to several golf courses, the Newark Bears baseball team and numerous parks and recreation centers, Newark, New Jersey has something for everyone. With the addition of the Train-to-Plane, a direct link from Newark International Airport and local hotels, Newark provides convenient transportation and has become a great moving destination.

History:
New Jersey's independence from New York became official in 1738. And in June 1776, the provincial congress adopted a constitution and New Jersey was finally declared a state. Because of its strategic position, New Jersey was a major player in the American Revolution. During the 50 years that followed, the area experienced a period of enormous economic expansion. The vital textile industry, powered by the falls of the Passaic, was initiated at Paterson. Potteries, shoe factories, and brickworks were built and roads were improved. During the early 1970s, the state government planned for substantial urban renewal and economic development projects, but the movement away from central cities continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s and into the 1990s. The Meadowlands Sports Complex opened in the mid-1970s and today includes Giants Stadium, home to two professional football teams, and Brendan Byrne Arena, which hosts professional hockey, basketball and special events. New Jersey was hard hit by recession in the early 1990s and the state suffered from overdevelopment, however, increasing economic diversity had fueled a recovery.

Economy:
Newark, New Jersey sits at the heart of the New York-New Jersey’s metropolitan area industrial economy. Today, the city continues to rely on its advantageous location at the hub of air, sea, road and rail transportation networks for economic expansion. Manufacturing was traditionally the city's most important economic sector, but transportation-related industries and telecommunications firms have recently surpassed it. Several major highways, railway routes and a busy international airport make the city an important mid-Atlantic distribution and retail trade center. The city is one of the country’s leading areas in the wholesale trade of chemicals and machinery, and the third largest writer of life insurance policies; both Mutual Benefit and Prudential Insurance Companies are headquartered in Newark.

Tourism:
Begin your exploration at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Renowned for its quality of performances, the Center helps to support Newark tourism by attracting major artists to the city. Next, also located in the downtown section is the Newark Museum. The Newark Museum is a fascinating place to learn and experience the arts and natural sciences. Newark Museum is New Jersey’s largest museum, housing more than 80 galleries. Other distinguished venues in the city include the Newark Public Library and the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, which both act as major center for upcoming and well-established African American artists. Whether you are visiting New York or New Jersey, explore Aljira, and experience the richness of African American culture. Also located in Newark is Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies, in the University Heights section of the city. Newark, New Jersey once one of America's great jazz cities, is today home to many clubs providing musical entertainment. For the sports fanatic, enjoy a NFL football game, and root for the home team Giants and Jets. Nightlife in the city offers its own collection of restaurants and bars. And if you’re looking for more, keep in mind that you are only a short trek to the Big Apple—where the possibilities are endless.
