St. Charles, Missouri

Today, St. Charles, Missouri serves as the county seat of the state's fastest growing county and is the second largest city in the St. Louis metropolitan area. In August of 2008, St. Charles won recognition in Money magazine as being among the 100 Best Places to live in the nation. Those moving to St. Charles will discover an area for its rich history as one of the oldest towns west of the Mississippi coupled with the city's modern riverfront and rapid growth.

History:
Governor William Clark of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition first established the District of St. Charles on October 1, 1812. The district extended from the Missouri River on the south to the Canadian border on the north, and from the Mississippi River on the east to the Pacific Ocean. It comprised all of what are now Minnesota and Iowa and major portions of the states of Idaho, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Oregon. The famed pioneer, Daniel Boone, was one of the early settlers in St. Charles County, migrating from Kentucky in 1795 and residing in the county until his death in September 1820. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition departed from St. Charles on their historic overland journey to the Pacific. Following Missouri's admission to the Union in August 1821, St. Charles served as the first capital of the new state. And for much of the era of the westward expansion the city served as the eastern terminus for the stagecoach lines and supply trains that transported settlers and their supplies to the trailheads for the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails at Kansas City and St. Joseph. It is clearly one of the most historically significant places on the North American continent.

Economy:
The city of St. Charles, Missouri is a great place for business growth. The city is the second largest city in the St. Louis region in the fastest growing county in the metropolitan area. Growth is the defining characteristic of St. Charles County, having a population increase of 33.3 percent since 1990 to 280,883 in 2000. St. Charles is committed to providing the infrastructure needed for the growth and development of the community. Federal, state and local funding are contributing to an expansion of the transportation system, specifically improvements to Interstate 70. An extensive fiber optic system is provided throughout the City by SBC. The city of St. Charles is the largest city in Missouri that is 100 percent DSL accessible. In addition to having a strong business environment, St. Charles is a pleasant place to live, offering friendly neighborhoods, affordable cost of living, excellent health care, outstanding educational opportunities, and a vast range arts and leisure activities. Money Magazine ranked St. Charles on its 2008 list of "100 Best Places to Live."
