Rochester, Michigan

The population of Rochester, Michigan may only be about 12,000, but because it is located just a bit north of metro Detroit it does not lack variety. You can enjoy the feel of a small area with the advantage of a large city right next door. It is a great location to experience all four seasons with warm summers and cold winters. This makes the natural beauty of sitting amidst three waterways even more dramatic. Residents enjoy hiking, fishing and biking. It is great place if you are moving there and want the best of nature, while still residing not far from the bigger city. Rochester was considered in the top 100 of "Best Places to Live" in 2005 according to the CNN/Money survey of Great American towns, a nice feature for sure if you are moving to the area.

Economy:
The cost of living in Rochester is very close to the national statistics, but the good news is that median income is on the higher side, sitting at just under $68,000 in 2009, with the median cost for a home at that time staying fairly low at around $176,000. The unemployment rate aligns closely with the nationwide numbers; however, jobs have been on the increase in the area since 2009. Manufacturing is the biggest industry, with two major companies standing out, IBM and General Motors. With all of these exciting opportunities, it's no wonder why so many Rochester long distance moving companies are so busy.

History:
Before Michigan became a state in 1837, Avon Township, north of Detroit, was the first area developed in Oakland County, Michigan. Settlers coming from the New England area, and even southern Canada, cleared land and started farming. Rochester, which was part of that area, incorporated as a village in 1869. However, it was not until 1967 that Rochester emerged as an actual stand alone city. With an abundance of water power surrounding it, thanks to the Clinton River, Stony Creek and Paint Creek, the area became a leader in water powered mills, producing basics for food, clothing and shelter. Sawmills and carding mills were top producers. The land was very self sufficient until the early 1900s when many workers, including some of the farmers, started heading to Detroit to work in factories. Much of the farming land was sold off to build sub-divisions that would offer housing to the booming population.

Tourism:
One of the most popular places to visit in Rochester is the Farmer’s Market open May through October. Fresh produce, flowers and anything representative of Michigan are there for you to enjoy. Located in Rochester Hills, is one of the largest historical homes in the US, Meadow Brook Hall. Along with numerous museums and places to visit in surrounding areas, Rochester itself has The Museum of New Art and Rochester Hills Museum close in. Also, right in downtown during the holiday season, you can witness The Big Bright Light Show, a holiday treat that is surpassed by very few. For residents and tourists more attracted to nature than to the bustling shopping areas, the quantity of green and water in the area will be welcomed on foot, bike or car.
