Valdosta, Georgia is the county seat of Lowndes County and is the main city of the Valdosta Metropolitan Area. The city goes by the motto of “City without Limits.” The administration aims to provide the best public services that exceed the expectations of its citizens. Many people are moving to the city every year as the reputation of Valdosta grows both as a comfortable residential city and a progressive economic hub. Valdosta is most popularly known as the “Naval Stores Capital of the World” as it supplies 80 percent of the global demand. The city is also the main commercial centre in South Georgia with several manufacturing plants operating actively. Surrounding areas have a large agricultural produce of tobacco, turpentine, pine lumber and pulpwood. Inside the city, the retail industry is particularly strong. The Valdosta Mall is a major regional shopping centre. Popular stores including Best Buy, Lowe’s, Office Max and Home Depot are located in or near the building. The healthcare and education are the major employers in the region. The median household income of Valdosta was estimated to be $31,306 in 2009. Another advantage in the city for people moving to Valdosta, Georgia is the range of affordable housing. This significantly lowers the living costs of the city.

History:
The area was originally a steamboat landing on the Withlacooche River. Many people started settling in the area and a small town developed - then known as Troupville. It was named after Governor George M. Troup. The following years saw the construction of the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad about four miles away from the town. The consequent expansions of the town were towards the railroad. Many of the residents relocated nearer to the railroad and the resulting settlement became known as Valdosta. The city was named after George M. Troup’s Estate and was officially incorporated in 1860.

Tourism:
The city has an interesting history and serves as the main hub of the surrounding region. Tourists interested in the history of the area can visit the Lowndes County Historical Society Museum. Other major landmarks include the Carnegie Library, Cavalry Church and the Fairview Historic District. People fond of outdoor recreation can visit the Cherry Lake and other nearby reservoirs to enjoy water sports and fishing. There are also numerous shopping centres where families and friends can come for their weekend shopping trips. Valdosta also celebrates numerous festivals like the Azalea International Folk Festival which draws hundreds of people from all over the state. The festival is held in March every year. The city is served by the Valdosta Regional Airport located about 6 miles away.
