History:
The area was originally a steamboat landing on the Withlacooche River. Many people started settling in the area and a small town developed - then known as Troupville. It was named after Governor George M. Troup. The following years saw the construction of the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad about four miles away from the town. The consequent expansions of the town were towards the railroad. Many of the residents relocated nearer to the railroad and the resulting settlement became known as Valdosta. The city was named after George M. Troup’s Estate and was officially incorporated in 1860.

The city has an interesting history and serves as the main hub of the surrounding region. Tourists interested in the history of the area can visit the Lowndes County Historical Society Museum. Other major landmarks include the Carnegie Library, Cavalry Church and the Fairview Historic District.
