Gainesville, Georgia

Over the years, the city of Gainesville, Georgia has won many glamorous titles, mainly down to its friendly residents and also thanks to its prime location too. It is no coincidence that Gainesville is known as the “Queen City of the Mountains” and the “Hospitality Capital of the World”. So come and see for yourself or better still consider moving to this delightful part of America. Those moving to Gainesville will discover an exciting place with friendly people.

History:
Originally known as “Mule Camp Springs,” Gainesville started out as a collection of houses and some stores dating back to the eighteenth century. The land had traditionally belonged to the Creek and Cherokee Indians. Hero of the War of 1812, General Edmund P. Gaines was honored by having his name bestowed on the town. Gold was discovered in adjacent Lumpkin County in 1828 and so began one of the many gold rushes and with that, came prosperity as excited immigrants flooded into Gainesville with the resultant increase in trading stores, hotels, music halls and the like. Once the novelty of the gold rush wore off, Gainesville focused on developing the prime agricultural land nearby and soon the makings of a prosperous community began to unfold. Gainesville escaped much of the hardship of the Civil War, probably down to the absence of any railroad in the area. However the railroad did finally arrive in 1871 and this opened Gainesville up to new commercial opportunities and networks. With the arrival of electric power to Gainesville in 1902 the city became a popular resort town. By the 1930s, poultry farming had become big business in the city and by World War 2 it had surpassed cotton as the number one trade activity in Georgia. Gainesville continued to flourish through the twentieth and into the present century.

Economy:
In terms of employed persons manufacturing is by far the biggest contributor in Gainesville, with around 3,000 people or 27 percent of the employed workforce. The education sector clocks in with some 1,700 positions followed by construction with just over 1,000. Wholesale, retail, agriculture - which includes forestry, fishing, hunting and mining - also make useful contributions to the job market and local economy. Then let us not forget management, finance and insurance, transportation and warehousing and public administration. Of course, arts, entertainment and tourism in general have important profiles too and it certainly all adds up to a healthy and diverse mix of work opportunities feeding the local economy.

Tourism:
Gainesville is set in beautiful surroundings, hence its nick name of “The Queen City of the Mountains.” Check with Tourism in Gainesville for information on upcoming events and main attractions in the City. With Lake Sidney Lanier close by and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains visible from town, there are sure to be several places of interest for you to visit and enjoy. And, not forgetting the local brag about being the “Hospitality Capital of the World,” stand by for one really special time when you visit this lovely city.
