Waterbury, Connecticut

Waterbury is within driving distance of both New York City and Boston, and offers workers affordable housing. In addition, Waterbury, Connecticut is working to revamp many of the city's unused freight yards and warehouses, and turn them into prime office space. New luxury hotels have been built, the city's south end is now home to the biggest mall in New England, and industrial parks in remodeled metal works factories are proving profitable. Those moving to Waterbury will also discover a city with advanced technology, historic architecture and diverse neighborhoods.

History:
Waterbury when the town was incorporated in 1686. It was chartered as a city in 1853; in 1901, city and town were consolidated. In 1878, the Waterbury Watch Company was organized for the explicit purpose of producing cheap watches. These watches gained a reputation for shoddy workmanship, so the company abandoned the brand and renamed itself the New England Watch Company. It was later incorporated into the company that became Timex. A visit to Timexpo provides a look into a century and a half of watch making in Waterbury. Waterbury's two hospitals are Waterbury Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. Waterbury hospital opened in 1890 in a Victorian mansion overlooking the city. The cornerstone of St. Mary's was laid in 1907 and the hospital was dedicated two years later. The Sisters of St. Mary’s of Chambery founded it. Post College, a regional business college, was founded in 1890. In 1990, it affiliated itself with the worldwide Teikyo Group and is now known as Teikyo Post University. The University of Connecticut has operated a campus in Waterbury for about half a century. The Railroad Museum of New England operates the Naugatuck Railroad between Thomaston and Waterbury. The Golden Age of Trucking Museum displays exhibits from the history of trucking, with an emphasis on the 1950's. In 1955, 60 hours of precipitation resulted in 19 inches of rain and caused 50-mile-per-hour floodwaters. Because of the flood, 19 Waterbury citizens died and 50 million dollars in property damage occurred. With the closing of the last brass shop in the 1970s, this huge complex stood empty and Waterbury faced a grim future. With investment and planning, by 1983 Waterbury had successfully diversified its economy, while continuing to attract new businesses and residents.

Economy:

The Waterbury Region has always been an ideal location to establish a business where you can still maintain the highest quality of life. We invite you to take a closer look to see what we have to offer you, your family and your company. Main St. Waterbury is a grassroots, community organization for downtown revitalization and historic preservation. By improving the physical appearance of downtown Waterbury, promoting its architectural and cultural assets, organizing volunteer initiatives, sponsoring events, and fostering public and private partnerships, Main St. Waterbury is working to rejuvenate Waterbury's downtown district without sacrificing its character or heritage.
