Salinas, California was immortalized by John Steinbeck—an American writer who was born in February 27, 1902 in the same city. Steinbeck graduated from Salinas High School and attended Stanford University before he moved to New York City where he became the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer we all had to read in high school. Steinbeck had fond times living on Monterey Bay on coastal California; we can tell as he often wrote about this Salinas setting into his fiction. You’ll see little pieces of this setting in his novels "Tortilla Flat," "Of Mice and Men" and "The Grapes of Wrath." After Salinas City and State of California were recognized officially as a part of the U.S., it became a land of livestock and agriculture. The railroads came to California in 1868 to move goods and people around bringing even more economic growth to the area. Salinas City grew its major industry into the WWI years.
