Salinas, California was immortalized by John Steinbeck—an American writer who was born in February 27, 1902 in the same city. Steinbeck graduated from Salinas High School and attended Stanford University before he moved to New York City where he became the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer we all had to read in high school. History:
The first residents of Salinas, California were groups of Native Americans. Centuries later, European settlers came to Salinas and made a home in the Carmel, Soledad, San Juan Bautista and the San Antonio Valley. Mexican eventually overthrew their Spanish counterparts that were dispersed here in a land they called “Salinas” meaning “salt marshes in Spanish. After Salinas City and State of California were recognized officially as a part of the U.S., it became a land of livestock and agriculture. The railroads came to California in 1868 to move goods and people around bringing even more economic growth to the area. Salinas City grew its major industry into the WWI years. Another very important aspect about Salinas that you may not have known until arrival is that the city is the birthplace of legendary writer John Steinbeck.
