Montgomery, Alabama

Montgomery, Alabama is a central city in the Southern state of Alabama that houses about 201, 568 people. It is the second most populous city in the state and the state’s capital. Montgomery, Alabama was established in 1819 along the Alabama River. In 1861, it became the first Confederate States of America. Slavery was well under way in the early years of the city’s existence until the Civil Rights Movement during the mid-20th century. In March 1955, a black teenager named Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus. She was arrested by white officers and shunned at school by her classmates. Impervious to the negative reactions, she would later take on segregation by participation in the landmark busing case, Browder v. Gayle as one of four plaintiffs. Nine months later, Rosa Parks famously boarded a bus in December 1955 after a long day at work in a department store. All African-Americans at the time, with the recognition of Jim Crow Laws, were expected to sit in the back of the bus. However, Parks took the last empty seat. At the next stop, a white man gets off and the driver demands Parks give up her seat so he could sit. It was this act that lead to her eventual arrest and appearance in front of John B. Scott that ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Visitors and people moving to Montgomery, Alabama love the fact that the city is immersed in such history—as the battle for civil rights was fought here. Montgomery, Alabama is now an open and diverse place to that receives many intrastate and interstate movers and tourists.

Economy:
From the mid-1800s to the 1870s, cotton boosted Alabama’s economy greatly. Textiles, clothing, papers and wood products were also grown and produced very successfully. In recent years, however, Alabama has developed a lower wage rate than the rest of the state. Industries such as metal production have lost some of its importance. And the recession has affected the state’s manufacturing jobs greatly. However, the transportation industry has boomed over the last couple decades—as an example, a new Hyundai Plant opened in Montgomery, Alabama. Caterpillar is also looking to build a plant in Montgomery amongst one or two more city options.

Automotive industries are big in Southern Alabama, but so is the aerospace field that boasts over 330 companies in the state alone. Distribution companies are also big in the area. Major plants include: Home Depot, Wal-Mart, McLane Company, ACE Retail Support Center and Target. These flourishing industries are bringing jobs to people in the region and are also bringing people to the state – making Montgomery moving companies as successful as they are.

History:
The area’s first settlers populated the area at the start of the 1800s. Montgomery County was named after Major Lemuel P. Montgomery of Virginia who died during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814. These lands were offered for sale to commercial and residential developers. Rivalry over the area composing Alabama Town and the town of East Alabama resulted in the merging of the two towns into today’s Montgomery. The city was incorporated into the state in 1819 and became the state capital in 1846. In 1861, Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederate States of America.
