Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Yonkers, New York

Rising from the east bank of the majestic Hudson River, the City of Yonkers covers 21 square miles and is the fourth largest city in New York State.  A strategic location, charming neighborhoods, diverse recreational experiences, varied housing options and a stable economy make Yonkers an outstanding place to live, work and play. The number of people moving to Yonkers keeps growing, raising the city’s population to approximately 200,000 as of 2001. The trend of moving of Yonkers is likely to continue due to citywide revitalization initiatives aimed at boosting investments, increasing commercial and retail space, spurring waterfront development and attracting new businesses to the city. Ultimately, coming home to spectacular views of the breathtaking Hudson River, the spectacular Palisades and the shimmering New York skyline is what makes moving to New Yonkers a rewarding experience. As Cornelius Hackl proudly declares to Irene Molloy in playwright Thornton Wilder’s “The Matchmaker,” Yonkers is truly “the most beautiful town in the world.”

Economy:
Yonkers’ strategic location along the Hudson River has long played a significant role in is development,  first as a trading center in the 1700s and 1800s, up to its present-day status as a leading center of commerce and industry within the Tri-State metropolitan area. In fact, one of the biggest attractions for moving to Yonkers is the city’s unequalled access to New York City, the nerve center of the world, thereby earning Yonkers the unofficial nickname of the “Gateway to the Big Apple.” According to CNN.com/Money Magazine estimates, job growth was 3.46 percent from 2000 to 2005, while median family income was 58,316 in 2006. Employment is distributed across the professional services, manufacturing, retail, finance, business, wholesale trade, transportation and communications, public administration and construction sectors. Local government initiatives continue to leverage Yonkers’ competitive strength as an industrial location within Westchester County and the tri-state region. To get more businesses to relocate to Yonkers, the city has embarked on several revitalization projects, including the rehabilitation of the Yonkers Metro-North Train Station, construction of residential and commercial real estate units along the Hudson waterfront and the restoration of the Recreation Pier, the only Victorian Pier remaining on the Hudson River.

History:
Present-day Yonkers emerged out of a land grant received by young Dutchman Adriaen Van der Donck in the late 1640s from the Dutch East India Company. Initially referred to as “The Djonk Herr’s Land,” Van de Donck’s settlement came to be known by various names, from “The Younckers,” to “The Yonkers,” until it was shorted to “Yonkers.” In the late 17th century, the Philipse family acquired Van der Donck’s land and subsequently built the Philipse Manor Hall at the juncture of the Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers. Yonkers’ strategic waterfront location and innovations in land and water travel spurred the town’s development as a major trading and industrial center. Early settlers were soon joined by immigrants who were moving to Yonkers in record numbers, necessitating the establishment of more saw mills and grist mills, taverns, general stores and blacksmith shops. The Village of Yonkers was incorporated on April 12, 1872 with a population of approximately 7,500. Barely two months later, the population had grown to about 20,000, and on June 1, 1872, Yonkers was incorporated as a city.

Tourism:
Whether hiking at Tibbetts Brook Park, hitting the links at the  Dunwoodie Golf Course, or catching an outdoor jazz performance while admiring the Hudson River sunset, you’ll find there’s plenty to do in Yonkers long after Yonkers movers have delivered the last of your moving boxes. Recreational activities are available year-round at Yonkers’ ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, golf courses, indoor pools and skating center. Marvel at world-class exhibitions and programs of the Hudson River Museum, or take a scenic walk of the Old Croton Trailway State Historic Park. Thursdays are best spent browsing fresh produce, home-baked goods and an exciting flea market at the St. John’s Farmer’s Market in the church courtyard in downtown Yonkers.
