Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Van Nuys, California

According to Census data, the population of Van Nuys grew by more than 10 percent from 2000 to 2008. Why are so many people relocating to Van Nuys?

Perhaps it’s because this Los Angeles neighborhood has such a vibrant outlook. In this district, neighbors know how to have a good time. For example, the Cedros Associated Neighborhood throws several barbeques and neighborhood block parties each year. Van Nuys also boasts an established community gardening club and the oldest continuously-operating fire station in Los Angeles.

If you’re moving cross-country to Van Nuys, you may be pleasantly surprised by how culturally diverse it is compared to other parts of the country. Although the Los Angeles Times suggests that Van Nuys is only “moderately diverse” compared to other parts of the city, it boasts a broader diversity than a typical American town. Van Nuys has traditionally welcomed many immigrant communities; for example, it is home to a sizable community of Armenians. Many of the other residents have relocated to Van Nuys from Central and South America, particularly from Mexico and El Salvador.

Economy:
What else keeps Van Nuys moving companies so busy? Perhaps it’s the relatively low cost of housing compared to other Los Angeles neighborhoods. This is also a draw for many businesses, which are moving to Van Nuys to take advantage of the bargain-priced real estate. The low cost of commercial space is a bonus for any enterprise that needs a large warehouse to house its operations. As more businesses arrive in the neighborhood, many of the formerly-abandoned factories have been renovated to make room for retail spaces and lofts. An excellent example of this trend is The Plant. This former General Motors factory now houses a wide range of small businesses, including a movie with sixteen screens and the Academy of Barbering Arts.

History:
One of the first settlers in this part of California was Isaac Van Nuys, whose name became associated with the area. The neighborhood began as a center for agriculture, but in 1911, it became a target for land speculators. Van Nuys soon became a popular California suburb. By the 1950s, it was famous for the Van Nuys Boulevard, where teenagers cruised their souped-up hotrods up and down the “strip” every weekend evening. Many famous—and infamous—people have called Van Nuys their home, including actresses Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, and gangsters Mickey Cohen and Bugsy Siegel.

Tourism:
Van Nuys has many attractions to offer an interested tourist. If you’re flying in from another part of the country, land your private plane at the Van Nuys airport. The long-running airfield has been famous since 1929, when Amelia Earhart set a speed record there. The airport commemorates the event in its Museum and Public Observation area, where members of the public can learn about the history of aviation and watch the busiest general aviation airport on the globe. The Van Nuys airport continues to make news headlines as a favorite departure-point for globe-hopping Hollywood stars, so visitors might even spot a celebrated actress or an infamous comedian.

Sportsmen and –women will enjoy a visit to the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area in Van Nuys. Whether you prefer to roller-skate, walk, bike or jog, you will enjoy the nine-mile bicycle path around the park’s perimeter. If you prefer a more sedate sport, visit Van Nuys Golf Course. Try the 18-hole pitch-and-putt, or take your game to the next level on the nine-hole executive golf course.

If you are taking a walking tour of Van Nuys, keep your eyes peeled for the many sites where Hollywood movies and television shows were filmed on location. Popular movies and shows with scenes filmed in Van Nuys have included “Grease,”  “Carrie,” “Escape from New York,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “The Office.”
