Ask the Expert: How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car?

Question: Is it cheaper to drive my car across country or have it hauled? I have two vehicles.

Answer: Depending on the service they use, my best guess is a price of $1,500 to $2,500 per auto.

A consumer can usually get a lower price working directly with an auto shipper. The advantage to having the moving company do it (the same one shipping your household goods) is that everything is handled by a single company, saving the consumer time and perhaps the hassle of locating a new provider.

Also, if they happen to have a smaller household goods shipment, adding the car to the order can sometimes get them better scheduling.  Most van lines reserve the option to contract out the car move to a car carrier company, but for the extra money they will put the car in an enclosed household goods trailer.  I believe they will often only do that in the "off" season (September/October through April/May) -- some won't put cars in the moving van during the busy summer months because they can make more money putting household goods there, not vehicles.

That said, the only way to know how much you charge is to get estimates -- you can get free estimates for this service on Relocation.com.
