Preparing Wood for Painting
If the wood detail in a room looks shabby, the whole room can look shabby. Woodwork is definitely one of those details that make a big difference.  It’s important to prepare wood properly before refinishing stain.

Patching chipped and gouged wood Use the following steps to prepare a resin compound to patch up old damaged wood.
  1. Clean out any loose material and scrape off any finish so the patching material bonds better.

  2. Mix the compound hardener with the filler as directed and apply with a putty knife

  3. Use a rasp to level the material a soon as it sets up hard but before it completely dries out or cures.

  4. When the material is fully cursed, san the patch to smooth and blend it in with the surrounding area.

  5. Apply to the patch before painting.
