Painting Paneling and Cabinets
Many people choose to paint over paneling over trying to remove the panel and risking destroying the drywall underneath.

Wood cabinets can be a challenge to paint over due to the factory finishes that include wax and varnish. Use the following steps to prepare these surfaces for painting.
  1. Clean the wood really well to remove dirt, grime and wax. Ammonia and water are usually sufficient to do the job however in cases where this does not work, try solvent such as mineral spirits.

  2. Take the shine off the surface by lightly sanding or by using a chemical de-glosser.

  3. Wipe the surface well to remove dust. A latex cloth dampened with mineral spirits or water works well.

  4. Apply a stain killing primer before applying a topcoat.
