Style

Take time to become familiar with some different styles to see if your personal style resembles any. Some examples include contemporary, cottage, country and modern.

Home decorating projects generally fall in to two categories, tough ones and easy ones.

If you are decorating your bathroom, kitchen or home office these generally the tough projects and the bedrooms, dining rooms and den fall in to the easy decorating category.

Kitchens are not only used for cooking and eating but also for entertaining so they need to be decorated to allow for this. Bathrooms, beyond the functional use have become more like oasis and rooms for relaxation and this should be reflected in the decorating style. The home office needs to be comfortable but must also meet all the needs of an office or a professional space.

The dining room is the room where the family gathers to relax and spend time together but may also be used for entertaining. The living room should be functional relaxing and a fun space. This should also hold true for the dining room although you may want your dining room to be more formal if it is only used for entertaining. Bedrooms should be a relaxing and functional style and most of all fun. If you are decorating a child's room or a guest room you will make different design choices.

The following are some tips to help you decorate like a professional.
  • Be prepared

  • Plan, plan, plan

  • Shop for you, not for your mother

  • Remain open to change
