Charleston, South Carolina

Described as the cradle of Southern history and charm, Charleston, South Carolina is the state’s oldest city and the place where the Civil War began. Downtown Charleston has the largest historic district in the United States. Reminders of the past are everywhere but that doesn’t mean that the city is standing still. It enjoys revitalization and has its doors wide open to everyone interested in relocating to Charleston. It is the state’s second most populous city with 124,593 residents -- making this small city a great moving destination.

Economy:
The economic foundation of Charleston rests upon several sturdy bases. Ever since 1901, when the Charleston Naval Shipyard was founded, the city has been relying on the military as its major industry. The Charleston Naval Weapons Station, Naval Hospital and the SPAWAR Systems Center Charleston are some of the agencies of The Department of Defense in the area. The Department of the Navy and Charleston Air Base also substantially contribute to region’s economy.

Charleston is also establishing itself as a prime location for jobs in electronics, information technology and health care. Medical University of South Carolina, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Trident Health System, and HCA division headquarters are among the region’s top employers. Tourism also plays a major role in keeping the Charleston economy afloat. The city is said to generate $5.1 Billion annually from tourism alone.

History:
A group of British settlers arrived at the tip end of the Charleston peninsula at what is today known as Battery Park in 1670. These settlers stopped at Charles Towne Landing, and began constructing the eccentric and charming city that exists today. Within just a few years, Charleston, originally called Albemarle Point but renamed to honor England's Charles II, would become one of America's leading and most sought-after cities.

Because of its strategic location among many rivers and near the Atlantic Ocean, both the military and the shipping industry have played significant roles in Charleston's history. Though the city's economy declined after the South's incorporation into the Union, the twentieth century brought economic prosperity to Charleston with the building of a naval shipyard during WWI and with the many industries established during WWII.

Tourism:
The rich history, the architectural elegance, and the wide range of activities that Charleston has to offer attract a steady stream of visitors. There is just no shortage of things to see, experience and learn in Charleston.

Charleston’s key attractions are its historic buildings, and art and historical museums. Among the most notable are: The Exchange Provost, The Powder Magazine, The Gibbes Museum of Art, The Fireproof Building, The Charleston Museum, and The Market Hall and Sheds. The city also plays host to the annual 17-day Spoleto Festival, an art festival that features over 100 performances by individual artists from various fields. The Cooper River Bridge Run and the MOJA Arts Festival are also notable events.

If you want a rewarding vacation, Charleston is the place to be. It is estimated that over four million visitor come to the city annually. Inevitably, some of these visitors end up wanting to stay for good, which would explain why Charleston moving companies are doing so well.
