Cheyenne,Wyoming

Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming. Cheyenne has a low crime rate and very clean air, and anyone thinking of moving to Cheyenne will find a city proud of its western heritage and its modern amenities.

Economy:
The median household income for Cheyenne is slightly lower than the state average. The cost of living is considerable lower than the national average. Originally an agriculture and ranching economy, Cheyenne has diversified its economy to include manufacturing, retail and transportation. The top employer in Cheyenne is the nearby F. E. Warren Air Force Base. Other top employers include Lowe’s and Wal-Mart distribution centers and the Sierra Trading Post Company. Wind turbines are becoming a big industry in the area due to the fact that Cheyenne is one of the windiest cities in the nation.

History:
The area was first home to Plains Indian Tribes. In 1865, the area was a campsite for Major General Grenville Dodge and his army troops, who were searching for a route over the Laramie Mountains for the railroad. Dodge later established a town there, and friends of his named it Cheyenne for the main Indian Tribe that lived there. Fort Russell was built there in 1867 to protect the railroad crews. A town soon built up around it. The city was incorporated in 1867. Soon, a church and a school were built and the city grew tremendously. In 1869 the city was named the capital of the state. When gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1875, the city became the stopping place for miners on their way to the gold fields to stock up. By 1882, Cheyenne was the wealthiest city in the nation. The area became a haven for sheep ranchers, and this is still a thriving industry there. The city has managed to maintain a high quality of life and a good air quality in spite of expanding to industry during the 20th century.

Tourism:
In July, Cheyenne Frontier Days, the largest rodeo in the world, takes place. You can tour the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum to find out all about Cheyenne’s past all year long. Also open year round is the Cheyenne Botanical Gardens. There are more than 50 buildings in Cheyenne that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places that you can view or tour. There are several museums where you can view historic exhibits from the past. There is more than one museum dedicated to railroad exhibits. In June and July you can watch the Cheyenne Gunslinger Gunfights enacted. There is much more to see and do there, and this includes outdoor activities as well.
