History:
Laramie was founded in the 1866 as a tent fort. The primary purpose was to protect the building of the transcontinental Union Pacific railroad. Soon, many settlers had arrived, and a small town had sprung up. The town was a violent and lawless place until the first county Sheriff organized a vigilante lynching party and took control. The city was incorporated in 1873. In 1869, when Wyoming was organized as a territory, it granted equal rights to women. In 1870, Laramie was the first place in the nation where women served on a jury, and the first woman voted in an election.
