In 1634, French fur trader Jean Nicolet established a small trading post in the area, making Green Bay the 13th oldest permanent settlement in America. The area had been occupied by Winnebago Indians who supported themselves by hunting and fishing and by cultivating corn, bean, squash and tobacco. The area remained under French control until 1761, when the British took control of the Bay and the settlement that had grown there. After the War 1812, the Americans finally gained control of Northeastern Wisconsin. Green Bay was incorporated as a city in 1854. Two years later, the Green Bay Area Public School District was founded.

In the 1850s, European immigrants started moving to Green Bay, having heard of America’s cheap land and good soil. With the arrival of the railroad in the 1860s, the city experienced rapid growth. In 1934, the city of Green Bay celebrated its tricentennial, with no less than President Franklin D. Roosevelt in attendance as a guest of honor. By 1950 the city had a population of 52,735.
