Everett, Washington

Twenty-five miles north of Seattle, Everett has a population of about 100,000. Everett has a very moderate year round climate, and gets about 38 inches of rain a year. The city sits on the mouth of the Snohomish River, and claims to have the largest marina on the west coast. Everett has over 40 parks and recreation centers, and is a family-friendly place to live. Anyone moving to Everett will enjoy its beauty, recreational opportunities and cultural events.

Economy:
Everett, Washington has a lower median income than the state average, and the cost of living is higher than the national average. The unemployment rate is about 10 percent. The major employers in Everett are Boeing, Esterline Control Systems that make components for aircraft and Fluke Electronics.

History:
The area was home to the Snohomish Indians first. Europeans arrived in 1861, and over the next several years a few settlers made it home. The city was laid out in 1890 by Henry Hewlett Jr. and Charles Colby. The town was named for Colby’s son. The city was incorporated in 1893. This is the year that the railroad came to Everett, and the area soon became a major lumber area. This did not last long, however, and the city was in a depressed state until 1900 when the city began attracting industry. Soon there were shipbuilders, fisheries, canneries, lumber mills and iron works there. The city was well established as a seaport by the beginning of World War I, but fell on economic hard times during the great depression. Change came with the advent of paper mills such as Scott Paper. The arrival of Boeing in the 1960s helped shift the city towards aerospace, telecommunications and computer technology. In the 1990s, a Navy seaport was established there.

Tourism:
The Everett Marina is a wonderful place to visit, with many water activities, plus dining and shopping. The Boeing Future of Flight tour features everything from an exhibit on the history of flight to new innovations. In June, the Sorticulture Festival joins art with gardens and nurseries. The Imagine Children’s Museum provides fun and interactive activities for the little ones. The Snohomish History Museum features exhibits about the history of the area and its logging, milling and farming. The Everett Symphony has a series of concerts throughout the year. The Iron Horse Casino provides gambling fun. The Narbeck Wetlands Sanctuary provides hiking, biking and wildlife viewing. Langus Riverfront Park has boating and fishing and has a three mile paved trail. Jetty Island is a conservation site that has many animals and birds. Enjoy a walk along the Lewis and Clark Native Garden, and go fishing in Howarth Park. Skiing and snowboarding in the winter is close by.
