Bremerton, Washington

Bremerton, Washington was named in 1891 after William Bremer, a German immigrant and newly-created entrepreneur. The U.S. Navy had for some time being considering the area as a site for a new naval dockyard serving the Pacific Northwest. Bremer purchased land and sold on to the Navy for the purposes of building the first stage of Puget Sound Navy Yard. Those moving to Bramerton will also discover that it is an incredibly scenic part North America.

History:
The U.S. Navy had long identified the waterways surrounding Bremerton as ideal for a Naval Dockyard and this became reality in 1891. Bremerton was incorporated 10 years later, but shortly afterwards faced a major crisis – Navy Secretary Charles Darling had decided to move a number of key logistical operations to California in 1902. Rumors spread that Bremerton was rife with prostitution and other undesirable goings on, although politics were certainly involved too. By 1906 though, the Naval Port of Bremerton was once again functioning as intended, although the naughty districts did continue to thrive! In the 1930s the impressive Manette Bridge connected Bremerton to nearby Manette and this bolstered economic activity in the area further. At the peak of World War II, Bremerton’s population topped out at over 80,000 residents thanks mainly to wartime activities at the Navy Base. Economic growth continued between 1950 and 1970, but in 1973, the new Trident Submarine Project was based 12 miles northwest of Bremerton instead, and so began gradual decline in fortunes.

Economy:
The U. S. Navy’s presence in Bremerton has played a significant role throughout the one hundred-and-ten years it has been in existence. This role was particularly strong during the Two World Wars, and again when the Trident submarine program was launched in the area in 1973. A number of supporting businesses and commercial ventures have set up in Bremerton too, as one might expect in a city of this size. This includes the retail trade, educational facilities and a lively tourism sector connected to the Kitsap Peninsula (which includes the city of Bremerton). A number of manufacturing concerns have brought with them specialized knowledge of supplying naval requirements as well. All in all, making up a healthy economy. With all of these opportunities, it's no wonder so many Bramerton moving companies are so busy.

Tourism:
The Kitsap Peninsula is a popular tourist area, and Bremerton forms part of its attractions. It is an amazing sweet spot nestled between the dynamic urban cities of Seattle and Tacoma, and includes wonders such as magnificent rain forests and pristine Pacific coastal beaches. You can experience endless water-based adventure sports but do no not overlook the charming waterfront communities, and the world-class golf courses and hiking trails either. Visit The Kitsap Peninsula Convention and Visitors Center for more information. Oh, and remember to keep time by to take in action typically found in a busy Naval Port. Ay, Ay Captain! Perhaps that should be Commander?

Universities/Colleges:

Interesting Facts:

  • There is no shortage or variety of good food in Bremerton – the city has 173 full-service restaurants.
  • Earthquake activity in Bremerton is historically slightly above the average of Washington State, and 237 percent higher than the U.S. average.
