Redmond, Washington is a wealthy residential community, designated as a suburb of Seattle. Those moving to Redmond will discover that it is within close proxmity to Lake Washington with the majority of its residential areas lying on the shores of these lakes.

Economy:
Statistics released by the United States Census Bureau show that the city has a total land area of 16.6 square miles and a population, counted in mid 2009, of 52,468 – a marked increase of 15.9 percent since 2000. Just over 3,300 residents live per square mile and the city is thus designated as being of average population density.

The Group Health Eastside Hospital, Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Evergreen Hospital Medical Center and Fairfax Hospital attend to the city’s medical needs, while King County International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Kenmore Air Harbor Seaplane Base provide air connections.

Redmond is famous for being the home of Microsoft (the largest employer in the city) and Nintendo. Other big name hi-tech companies operating out of the city are Visible.net, Concur Technologies, Wild Tangent and Data I/O Corporation.

The manufacturing sector also contributes to the city’s coffers; among the largest are the production of aerospace parts and machinery and medical instruments. It is to be noted that Redmond does not levy a business and occupation tax on income generated, but does have a business license fee.

History:
The area around what is now known as Redmond was originally the home of Native Americans. The first European immigrants came to the area in the 1870s and, because of the huge numbers of salmon in the nearby rivers, the community was named Salmonberg, but was changed to Melrose in 1881, named after the Melrose House inn. In 1883 the name of the community was once again changed, to Redmond, and this was the name used when the city was incorporated in 1912.

Tourism:
Redmond has a beautiful historical downtown area, a museum of history and archaeological excavations.

The Redmond Derby Days cycling festival is held in July every year around Lake Sammamish. The Concerts in Marymoor is an outdoor concert music festival, also held annually.

Teenagers and young adults hang out at the Old Redmond Firehouse which has been transformed into a music center for live concerts which locals are able to showcase their talent.
