Federal Way, Washington is situated in the south west of King County, is the midpoint between Tacoma and Seattle. Geographically, Federal Way is built on a plateau and is home to almost 86,000 residents, an increase of 3.2 percent since 2000. Those moving to Federal Way will also discover a fast growing city has a land area of 21 square miles with just over 4,000 inhabitants living per square mile.

History:
The area which we now know as Federal Way was established in the 1800s as a logging settlement. The city’s name derives from US Federal Highway 99 (renamed the Pacific Highway South and State Route 99) which was completed in the 1920s. By 1930 the settlement had a High School and in 1950 the name Federal Way was adopted by the Chamber of Commerce for the city. The 1970s and 1980s saw rapid expansion and the city was incorporated in 1990.

Economy:
Statistics released in January 2011 show that the Cost of Living Index for Federal Way as 111.5 points, above the national average for the United States of 100 points. Unemployment in December 2010 in Federal Way was 8.7 percent, below the average for Washington State of 9.2 percent.

There is a Technology Corridor close to Federal Way which employs large numbers of the city’s residents. Service companies and retail businesses are both large contributors to the city’s coffers and employers, with the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company being one of the most important; followed by World Vision, which has its headquarters in Federal Way and St Francis Hospital.

Tourism:
Federal Way is a haven for tourists who enjoy outdoor activities, as there are many lakes, parks, the Puget Sound shoreline and hiking trails to be explored, most notably Redondo Beach, Steel Lake Park, Dumas Bay Center and the West Hylebos Wetlands Park.
