History:
The origins of Springfield began in 1847 when a station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad route was built, together with the Springfield Depot Post Office. The building of a post office in the 1800s usually meant the establishment of a settlement which, with growth, became a town. This post office closed two years later. In 1877 another post office then opened a little way away, which remained in business until 1907 when it subsequently closed down and a new post office was built in 1910, once again closer to the railway station. This post office is still in existence today.

The 1950s and 1960s saw great growth in the area and by the 1970s Springfield already had a population of 25,000.
