Falls Church, Virginia

It may be a small place, but the city of Falls Church in Fairfax County is steeped in history. This city in Virginia was first settled in 1699 and there is a wealth of history attached to Falls Church both in regard of the Anacostan chiefdom that occupied the area for so long, and then the first European settlers who arrived just before the turn of the 18th century. William Gunnell’s Church made of wood in 1733 was later renamed Falls Church due to its close proximity to the falls nearby on the Potomac River. So if you are considering moving to Falls Church, be sure to first locate our knowledgeable real estate agents and then use their expertise to locate the apartment or real estate rental home that suits your needs.

History:
When incorporated in 1948, the boundaries of Falls Church included only the central parts of the area historically known by the same name, which could make for confusion while understanding the history of today’s City. The European settlers had arrived in the late 17th century and a wooden church was erected and named “Falls Church.” Two of the early Vestrymen were George Mason (1748) and George Washington (1763). The church was re-built in brick in 1769 and was promptly named the new seat of Fairfax Parish. Following the Revolution in 1784 the church fell away as a state church and was then abandoned altogether in 1789 probably due to the stigma attached to the Anglican Church of England. It was re-commissioned as a church some 50 years later and its remains are still evident in Falls Church to this day. Like so many colonial Virginia settlements, Falls Church sub-divided the original large plantations into smaller farms in the early 19th century. By the time of the American Civil War, Falls Church had experienced an influx of Northerners seeking land and wealth. By the early 20th century Falls Church was the largest town in Fairfax and had established itself as a commercial center. Desegregation in the 1950s and the arrival of many South Vietnamese at the end of the War in 1975 were further milestones along Falls Church’s path of history.

Economy:
Two Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Falls Church, and General Dynamics and CSC and Northrop Grumman are in the process of re-locating there too. The education sector, local government, retail and health care services industries as well as several small to medium enterprises rank as important employers in the City and all contribute to the local economy.

Tourism:
The Falls Church, Virginia Government website is very informative and contains information on upcoming events and attractions. Residents will welcome visitors openly and invite them to sample some culinary delights in their many fine eateries. Some of the “must see” tourist attractions around the City include the magnificent State Theater which received a complete makeover in the late 1990s. After that, try Eden Center the largest Vietnamese shopping complex on the East Coast with over 120 stores. For the more adventurous there is the Washington & Old Dominion Regional Park which is in fact a 45-mile section of old railroad converted into a trail for walking, skating, bicycling and running. One thing is for sure – you will not lack for things to do or see when you visit Falls Church, Virginia!
