Economy:
According to statistics released by the United States Census Bureau, the total land area of Jackson is 49.5 square miles. Its population, as counted in mid 2009, was 63,732, an increase of 6.9 percent since 2000. 1,288 residents live per square mile, thus rating Jackson as a city of low population density. The Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, Methodist Lebonheur Healthcare-Jackson and Pathways of Tennessee attend to the city’s health care needs, while Memphis International, McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport and Southfork Airport provide air connections.

The largest employer of the residents of Jackson is West Tennessee Healthcare, followed by its education system. Industrial output adds dollars to the city’s coffers in the form of food processing plants, machinery, tools and metalwork and appliances. Tourism, construction and farming are three other significant contributors to the economy of the city. Statistics released by the city of Jackson show that 29 percent of its workforce in employed in professional, managerial and related jobs; 24 percent work in sales and offices; and 19 percent of workers are employed in transportation services, material moving and manufacturing occupations. There is a Procter and Gamble Manufacturing Plant in Jackson, which produces the world famous Pringles Potato Chips.

History:
The first settlement of the area we now know as Jackson was on the banks of the Forked Deer River around 1820. This settlement was called Alexandria, but was later renamed Jackson in 1822. The actual City of Jackson was founded in 1821, when it also became the County Seat of Madison County.

Tourism:
The Gulf of Mexico coast has beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants and bars to cater to every tourist who wants a relaxing beach holiday. Interesting sites to visit in the area are the Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Area, the Britton Lane Battlefield, Cypress Grove Nature Park and Lake Graham.
