Cranston, Rhode Island

Cranston, Rhode Island is located in the Providence-Metro area and has a population of about 80,000 residents. Those moving to Cranston will find a city that still has a large rural area and is proud of its extremely diverse racial and ethnic mix.

Economy:
The median household income for Cranston is higher than the state average. The cost of living is slightly below the national average. Cranston has a good mix of industry and business, although many residents live there and work in Providence. Top employers include Swarovski Jewelry US, Yushin America Inc., Caroline Manufacturing and Ross Simons Jewelry.

History:
In 1636, Roger Williams purchased Providence from the local Indians. Two years later he purchased more land and this eventually became eastern Cranston. William Arnold became the first European settler by building a home in the area. Soon, three others settled there and Arnold’s bother built a grist mill. The town was incorporated in 1754. Much larger than it is today, much of the northern parts of Cranston were ceded to Providence in 1868.

Tourism:
The Roger Williams Zoo has over 1,000 species of animals. The Cranston Historical Society is housed in a 28 room mansion. The Sprague Mansion is a mansion built before 1808 and can be toured. There are many, many things to do and see in nearby Providence.
