Cranston has a good mix of industry and business, although many residents live there and work in Providence. History:
In 1636, Roger Williams purchased Providence from the local Indians. Two years later he purchased more land and this eventually became eastern Cranston. William Arnold became the first European settler by building a home in the area. Soon, three others settled there and Arnold’s bother built a grist mill. The town was incorporated in 1754. Much larger than it is today, much of the northern parts of Cranston were ceded to Providence in 1868.

Tourism:
The Roger Williams Zoo has over 1,000 species of animals. The Cranston Historical Society is housed in a 28 room mansion. The Sprague Mansion is a mansion built before 1808 and can be toured. There are many, many things to do and see in nearby Providence.
