West Chester, Pennsylvania

West Chester, Pennsylvania is located in the south eastern sector of the state and forms part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area. Those moving to West Chester will discover an area that is extremely cold in winter with the coldest month being January; and warm in summer, when the hottest month is July. Rain falls throughout the year and September has the highest rainfall. Heavy snowfalls are recorded during the winter months.

Economy:
Statistics released in January 2011 reveal that West Chester’s cost of living index is 7.2 points higher than that of the U.S. average of 100. Unemployment is relatively low, at just 3.5 percent. In response to data collected from the residents of West Chester, in 2000 Unisys Corporation launched a portal to serve the population, making it easier for them to access local governmental agencies, institutions and businesses and thus promoting the economic development of the area.

History:
The original settlement in the area now known as West Chester was called Turk’s Head after the Turk’s Head Inn which was build on land that is now the center of the Borough.
In 1786 West Chester became the seat of the Chester County local government and in 1799 was officially incorporated as a borough.

Tourism:
Architecture is one of West Chester’s greatest charms. It has more than 3,000 colonial structures still in existence which date from before the Revolutionary War; as well as many beautiful Victorian and a large number of stately Greek Revival masterpieces in its downtown area which are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Borough’s courthouse was designed by Thomas U. Walter who was also one of the architects of the Capitol in Washington D.C. Other notable places of interest in The Borough of West Chester are the Brandywine Battlefield, Valley Forge and Longwood Gardens.

West Chester is also known as the Athens of the West because of the large number of Greek Revivalist building in its downtown area.
The late civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, composer Samuel Barber (deceased 1981) and well-known artist Philip Jamison have all based themselves in West Chester.
