Akron, Ohio

Akron, Ohio is the heart of the rubber industry in the U.S., the birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous and the current site of the leading edge of polymer engineering and research. Akron's history has been one of adaptation: seeing opportunity and developing responses to key circumstances, which has led to the community becoming an industrial authority. Akron has given the U.S. over a century of automotive tires, plastics and oatmeal production; and has a long tradition of manufacturing and transportation success, and fine cultural tastes. It is thanks to all of these reasons and much more why people are so excited about moving to Akron.

History:
Akron was incorporated in 1865. There was considerable manufacturing growth following the Civil War, creating a significant population boom between 1860 and 1870. The city’s history and the history of the rubber industry are forever linked. The rubber industry transformed Akron from a tiny canal town into a booming city. The birth of the rubber industry was in the 1800s, long before America fell in love with the automobile. Goodyear Tire became the country’s top tire manufacturer and Akron was granted the title of “The Rubber Capital of the World.” Again, Akron experienced a population surge; its population exploding from 69,000 in 1910 to over 208,000 by 1920. People came for rubber factory jobs from places around the world. Of the over 200,000 immigrants, almost one-third were immigrants and their children. After the war, change was inevitable. And in the 1950s and 1960s, radial tires became the industry standard and Akron's factories weren't equipped for the change. The costs to make for adjustments, coupled with industry strikes and factory shutdowns in the 1970s and 1980s, destroyed the rubber business in Akron. Akron has since recovered from the tough days of the rubber industry. Akron is redefining itself as it celebrates its contributions to American ingenuity, music and sports. The downtown area is undergoing resurgence, and the Ohio & Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor has been preserved in recognition of the history of the waterway.

Economy:
Formally known as the "Rubber Capital of the World," Akron has moved forward into the world of liquid crystal and polymer research, development and technology. More than 400 companies in the area work on one aspect of polymers or the other, creating what is referred to as "The Polymer Valley." The University of Akron promotes the industry with both a College of Polymer Engineering and a specialized laboratory and research facility accessible by Akron area business partners. As a transportation center between the east coast of the rest of the country, Akron has built an industry around motor vehicle production, freight movement and aeronautics. In 2003, the city’s local branch of Lockheed-Martin was awarded $2 million by the Department of Defense to develop a new high-altitude airship capable of carrying a variety of payloads. Local researchers in the aeronautics field have been studying "lighter than air" technology for aircraft since the days of the Goodyear Blimp being docked in Akron. With all of these opportunities, it's no wonder why Akron moving companies are so busy.

Tourism:
With a wonderful array of sites and attractions, accommodations and restaurants and countless recreational activities, Akron, Ohio is a wonderful destination for fun and excitement for residents and visitors alike. The Akron Zoo, located just west of downtown, is perect for the animal-lover in us all. The zoo is an accredited world conservation zoo, a distinction given to only about 10 percent of zoos across the US. The Akron Zoo is a great place for families with children, and a great place to visit throughout the year. With attractions for all ages, Fun 'n' Stuff is the perfect place for the entire family. Open year-round and offer group packages for schools, scouts, youth groups and corporate outings Fun 'n' Stuff is sure to be hit. Next, explore the National Inventors Hall of Fame honors the women and men responsible for the great technological advances that make human, economic and social advancement possible.

Colleges/Universities:
