Dayton, Ohio

Today Dayton, Ohio is at the center of industrial and high technology development. Known as the "Birthplace of Aviation," Dayton is located at one of the busiest crossroads of America. The city is proud to offer residents accessibility and affordability, along with excellent attractions, fantastic arts and culture performances, beautiful parks and attractions, a variety of sporting venues and events and fabulous shopping and dining. With all of these exciting amenities, it's no wonder why people are moving to Dayton.

History:
With the completion of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1829, Dayton’s relationship with Cincinnati was forged and the town began to flourish. By the 1840s, Dayton was one of the wealthiest communities in the state. During the 20th century, Dayton continued to thrive. The city became known as the home of Wilbur and Orville Wright, the brothers who made the first successful aircraft. A flood in 1913 caused a considerable loss of life and property in the city and momentarily slowed Dayton’s growth. In the 1920s, Dayton enjoyed the remarkable economic prosperity being experienced across the country. The positive outlook of the city was irritated by the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan in areas throughout the Midwest. All of this, however, was overshadowed by the mounting challenges caused by the Great Depression. Dayton benefited from the growth of wartime industries during World War II, receiving nearly $2 billion in government defense contracts during that time. Dayton’s economy has remained strong in the decades following the Second World War, in spite of a decline in many of its traditional industries. More recently, Dayton was most famous as the site of the Dayton Peace Accords in 1995. With the support of the United States, Serb and Bosnian representatives, a peace settlement was reached at Wright Patterson Air Force Base that led to a decline in violence in Bosnia.

Economy:
Mainly manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and services sustain Dayton’s economy. In recent years, Dayton has suffered from many of the same challenges affecting the national economy. Most major industries have witnessed reductions in jobs in recent years, with industries related to the automotive industry being hardest hit. Dayton businesses are working towards recovery by focusing on increased business investment and diversifying into the manufacturing of technical products and services. The city’s employers are also concerned about the constraints of a stagnant and aging population; employers are working to recruit highly skilled employees to the area. The most significant factor in determining Dayton's economic future, however, is the fate of the area's major manufacturing employers such as General Motors, Delphi Automotive and Behr. In past years, employment in health services and education has grown steadily in Dayton. More than 35 colleges and universities in the metropolitan area provide a significant number of jobs. Area health care facilities have also been expanding, both their physical facilities and the services offered. Technological advances in health care have been eagerly adopted in Dayton area hospitals, making this economic sector one of the most promising for the region.

Tourism:
Dayton, Ohio’s music, theater and visual arts performances is what makes the city the special place it is. Spectacular exhibits by artists will leave you in wonder, while world-renowned establishments such as the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will undoubtedly charm and amaze you. If you yearn for drama and inspiration, you will certainly find it here in Dayton's spirited arts community. One of the country's finest art museums, The Dayton Art Institute features a permanent collection of over 20,000 pieces spanning over 5,000 years of history. The striking Italian-Renaissance-style building, which sits on a hill overlooking downtown, boasts 60,000-square-feet of exhibit space. No matter what your interests, Dayton is proud to offer an abundance of attractions sure to educate and entertain everyone in your group.
