Greensboro, North Carolina

Located between the mountains of North Carolina and the East Coast, Greensboro, North Carolina is home to gently rolling hills and has a mild climate and a "village within a city" atmosphere. Those moving to Greensboro will soon enjoy the area's world-class golf, a revitalized turn-of-the-century commercial and industrial district, boutique and antique shops and many fine restaurants. In addition to the city’s countless attractions, Greensboro also boasts a stable economy, a low crime rate and a booming downtown district.

History:
Greensboro, North Carolina was founded in 1808. By the 1890s, the city was attracting northern industrialists to the area in bunches. Ten years later, Greensboro was considered the hub of the Southern textile industry, with large-scale factories producing flannel and denim. Economic success brought to Greensboro through textiles resulted in the construction of prominent 20th century civic architecture. During this time, Greensboro continued to swell in wealth and population. Other prominent industries became established in the city, including Vicks Chemical Corporation, Pomona Terra Cotta Works and Carolina Steel Corporation. During this period of growth, Greensboro experienced a delicate housing shortage. Builders aimed to maintain a construction goal of 80 to 100 affordable housing units per year to provide homes for workers. Greensboro's real estate was considered "the wonder of the state" during the 1920s. Growth continued through the Great Depression, adding to Greensboro an estimated 200 new families per year to its population. Greensboro quick earned a reputation as a well-planned community, with a strong focus on education, parks and a profitable employment base.

Economy:
For years, the products of Greensboro's factories were better known than the city itself. However, a growing number of companies have today discovered the city’s award-winning quality of life, a low crime rate, and its thriving business climate provides residents low lease rates, below-average wages and modest overall costs. The long-established industries including textiles, furniture and tobacco remain a leading influence on the city’s economy. Unlike other areas that rely heavily on the country with a deep dependence on manufacturing, Greensboro has prospered, as jobs have been lost to automation and foreign imports. Diversification has been the city’s key. Sweden's Volvo Truck Corporation chose Greensboro for the headquarters of its Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corporation. International flavor has added to the area, courtesy of Twinings Tea of England and Fuji Foods of Japan, which located their U.S. manufacturing plants in Greensboro. The opening of the Piedmont Triad International Airport terminal just west of the city in 1982 set off a building boom along nearby Interstate 40 and the feeder roads to the airport that has not yet shown signs of dwindling.

Tourism:
Greensboro, North Carolina features many delightful buildings dating back to the early 1900s, and a selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs around Greensboro's Market Street and Green Street areas. Visit South Elm Street in Old Greensboro Historic District, which offers numerous antique shops and specialty stores, and is a popular destination of Greensboro. Nightlife in Greensboro ranges from shag dancing and beach music to an old-time country hootenanny at the Barn Dance. Barn Dinner Theatre, the oldest in the U.S., present shows year-round. The Barn-Dinner Theatre draws guests to enjoy theater in the round while feasting on an exceptional meal. From Revolutionary War sites to Underground Railroad depots, the city is drenched in history—offering residents and guest a chance to experience the past. Finally, step back in time andexperience a few hours at the Heritage Center, which chronicles the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, or enjoy a lazy day touring an area plantation such as the Mendenhall Plantation. Whatever your choice you are sure to find something in this growing Southern city.
