Edison, New Jersey is named after that famous inventor and local resident, Thomas Edison. Located in Middlesex County, New Jersey has as its official motto, “Let There Be Light”. It also has a tall Lighthouse beaming away on the official seal. Those moving to Edison will discover a bustling city with beautiful scenery.

History:
The Edison area was first settled in the late 17th century. Originally it was named “Piscatawaytown” which formed a village together with another township named Woodbridge. An area of Piscatawaytown village was known as “Nixon” in honor of Lewis Nixon, a local community leader and manufacturer. To avoid confusion it would take some time to pass before the name changed to the familiar one of today. Meanwhile, Thomas Alva Edison had set up home, including a research laboratory, in a failed real estate development called Menlo Park which was in Raritan, both being part of the Piscatawaytown community. Over the years, Edison invented many things and even amassed a record 1,093 patents for a number of his creations. In 1924, there was a disastrous explosion at the Nixon Nitration Works, which caused 20 fatalities and flattened several square miles surrounding the factory. In 1954, the Nixon community decided to change their Townships name to “Edison” in honor of the prolific inventor who had died aged 83 in 1931. Today, Edison is one of the fastest growing towns in New Jersey.

Economy:
Edison has a versatile economic base, access to a large and diverse population, a very healthy per-capita income and an excellent transport infrastructure. This all bodes well for many new investment opportunities in redevelopments and new developments throughout this fine community. A revitalization plan known as the Amboy Avenue is currently being rolled out, check out that link for a progress update before you sign off. So too with the former Ford Plant at Hartz Mountain which has been identified as a prime redevelopment location. The future for Edison Township certainly looks exciting and promising!

Tourism:
Edison surely has it all from fabulous parks offering great recreational facilities to arts and culture. Then you will also find excellent historical sites including museums. We must not leave out great sports events, including golf and for those keen on water activities there is boating aplenty among other exciting water sports. For the more laid back look out for entertainment galore, and when you feel hungry you can choose from over 450 full-service restaurants where you are bound to find something to please your appetite.
