History:
Originally the area occupied now by North Las Vegas started out as a large ranch in 1875. In those early days violence was not uncommon and unfortunately brothers Edwin and William Kiel were found murdered on the ranch in 1900. The decision to locate the Nellis Air Force Base to a site some eight miles to the northeast of central Las Vegas was the main reason for the birth of the city of North Las Vegas in the early 1940s. The base was named after pilot-hero Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, who was shot down in action in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Since 1990 North Las Vegas’s population has quadrupled.
