Westland, Michigan

Westland, Michigan is a culturally diverse area that offers new residents numerous housing options. Those moving to Westland will also discover that the city is close to Detroit, almost 15 miles away. Nearby towns include Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, Dearborn Heights, Livonia, Canton, Plymouth and Romulus.

Economy:
Although most of the residents of Westland are employed in nearby Detroit, Westland does have industrial parks which contribute significantly to the coffers of the city.

These industries produce automotive spare parts, materials for the construction industry and precision instruments.

The main retail stores are found at the Westland Mall, which is one of the more important shopping centers in the region.

History:
The original inhabitants of the area which is known today as Westland were the Pottawatomi and Algonquian Native Americans. Settlers began coming to the region in the early 19th century, but settlements and villages only started to be formed around 1824. One of the earliest settlements was established in 1918 by Henry Ford, who used an existing flour mill for the beginnings of his car industry.

Westland has formerly been named Bucklin Township in 1827 when it was established and its name was changed many times before it became Westland, which was incorporated as a city in 1966.

Tourism:
The majority of tourist attractions for visitors to Westland are to be found in Detroit, although Westland does have 17 beautiful parks and Belle Isle which offer recreational facilities and activities.

The Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village is worth a visit to explore the history and culture of the area; as are the Renaissance Center and Fort Wayne.
