Economy:
The economy of Dearborn is based to a large degree on the automobile industry; and, to a lesser degree, retail, research and development and manufacturing plants add to the city’s economic base.

The Ford Motor Company is the basis of the automobile trade, but there are many other large employers, such as the Severstal Steel processing plant; and a number of small and medium sized companies and retail outlets that contribute to the city’s income. The Fairlane Town Center is located in Dearborn. It is one of the largest shopping centers in the United States.

History:
The Algonquian, Huron and Iroquoian tribes were the historical inhabitants of the area around Dearborn. The first settlement was a stagecoach stop on the route between Chicago and Detroit and was only established in 1795 by Europeans after the end of the American Revolutionary War. In 1836 the village of Dearborn was established and then incorporated in 1893. In 1928 Dearborn was consolidated with Fordson and incorporated as a city in 1929.

Tourism:
More than 1.6 million tourists come to Dearborn each year. The number one visitor attraction in Dearborn is the Henry Ford Museum, the Ford Rouge Factory Tours, the IMAX Theater and Greenfield Village where Henry Ford was born, the largest museum complex dedicated to the history of America in the United States. The Arab American National Museum and Fair Lane, Henry Ford’s estate which is listed as a historical landmark, should not be missed.

Dearborn has many restaurants and bars and a pulsating night life; and shopping is a delight. There are numerous parks, swimming pools, a dual ice skating rink, a golf course, tennis courts and athletic fields.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Fact:

  • Not only does Dearborn Municipality own property in another city - Milford in Michigan, it also owns property in another State – in Clearwater, Florida. Both these properties are considered as parts of the City of Dearborn and income generated from them boost Dearborn’s local government coffers.

Interesting Facts:

  • Henry Ford was born in Dearborn in 1863. After two unsuccessful attempts at producing and selling a Ford car he eventually got the investment capital and partners he needed to start the Ford Motor Company in 1903.
  • Dearborn continues to grow to this day, while many other cities world-wide try to emulate the success that this pioneering city has enjoyed down the decades.
