Troy, Michigan

Troy, Michigan is situated in, and is the largest city of, Oakland County; and is designated as a suburb of north Detroit. Those moving to Troy will discover an ethnically diverse, affluent and economically stable community that is often ranked the safest city in America, has affordable housing and some of the best schools in the state. CNN Money rated Troy as the 22nd “Best Place to Live” in America in 2008 and, in the same year, the city was rated the 4th Most Affordable US City.

Economy:
According to statistics released in mid 2009, Troy had a population of 80,557 inhabitants and a total land area of 33.5 square miles. 2402 residents live per square mile, thus designating the city as being of low population density.

The William Beaumont Hospital, Providence Hospital and Madison Community Hospital attend to the community’s health needs, while Oakland/Troy Airport provides air connections.

The main economic drivers for the City of Troy are its very profitable and high end commercial and retail sectors. In fact, Troy has a retail trading area totalling over 7 million square feet; an office area of more than 18 million square feet and its manufacturing and engineering sectors occupy around 20 million square feet.

The financial and technology sectors play a large part in employing the city’s residents. Other contributors to the economy of the city are its manufacturing sector which produces cars and automotive parts; chemicals and electronics. Troy is rated as an AAA city – one of very few in Michigan – and is rated as an excellent region to relocate new and existing business enterprises.

History:
The first land transaction in the area now known as Troy was in recorded in 1819. After an influx of settlers in 1821 the settlement grew and Troy Township was established in 1821. The City of Troy was officially incorporated in 1955.

Tourism:
Troy is a haven for world class restaurants and shopping. There are many historic buildings of note in the downtown area and more than 900 acres of parkland.
The 100 acre Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center is a sanctuary dedicated to nature and ecological education, which offers special programs designed to educate children.
