History:
The settlement traces its origins to the year 1812 when a District Attorney established a county seat at Baltimore. His property in the nearby suburbs was given the name of “Glennsburne”. Over the generations, the name of the property changed as it was passed to descendants. Records show names like Glennsbourne Farm, Glenburnie and also Tracey Station and Myrtle. The last two names were given by postmaster. In 1854 William Wilkins Glenn incorporated the Curtis Creek Mine, Furnace and Manufacturing Company as his family property. This business became very successful and as a result thousands of acres of Anne Arundel County land were bought by the family. Glenn’s descendants continued the business and made Glenburnie an official state subdivision in 1888. The family started development for a town on their land and settled there. In 1930, a postmaster split the two words in Glenburnie to form the official name Glen Burnie.

Tourism:
Glen Burnie has lots to offer to both residents and visitors. The city has a rich history and there are a number of historic sites and museums visitors can see. There is the famous Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, the Glen Burnie Museum, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum and the Battery Warehouse. The city also has many enjoyable outdoor activities. Parks and trails offer opportunities to cyclists and hikers. Picnickers can always find excellent picnic locations. There is also a skating rink, called the Glen Burnie Outdoor Skating, near the airport. Golfers can visit the Arundel Golf Park also located on acres of beautiful grassy slopes near the airport.
