Lafayette, Indiana

The county seat of Tippecanoe, Lafayette, Indiana is located 63 miles northwest of Indianapolis. With a population of more than 180,000, and a surging economy, it is one of the most important cities in Indiana. The area is the 215th largest metropolitan area in the nation and is home to one of the most globally well-known institutions, Purdue University. Lafayette is suited to people from all walks of life whether young or old, professional or student, single or married; everyone is welcomed here and adjusts quickly to call Lafayette their home. History:
The area of Lafayette was originally inhabited by Quiatenon Indians. Europeans arrived in the early 18th century and the French constructed a fort in 1717. The fort was primarily used for trading by fur trappers, native Indians and merchants. Lafayette was planned in 1825 by William Digby, and the city was named after the American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette. Wabash River was famous for its shipping activities and brought in a lot of economic opportunity to the city. Later, during the 1840s, the Wabash and Erie Canal was constructed which made the city’s location even more important. By 1850s, Lafayette also had railroads running through it. This made Lafayette an important industrial and trading centre in Indiana. Due to the economic advantage, many businesses began moving to Lafayette from the surrounding areas, increasing the city’s success even further.

Economy:
The most important factor and influence in the economy of the city is Purdue University. The university is recognized globally in multiple fields. Located in West Lafayette, Purdue University is active both academically and through its industrial activities. A number of companies and industries that operate here have originated from the university and its graduates. The research activities of Purdue also constitute an important part of the economy. Purdue is the largest employer in Lafayette. Apart from the university, a number of private companies and industries also have major operations in the area. Examples include Alcoa, producer of aluminium extrusions; Caterpillar, manufacturer of heavy duty diesel engines; Subaru Indiana, producer of automobiles; Tate & Lyle, manufacturer of food additives and chemicals; and Wabash National, the world’s largest manufacturer of semi-truck trailers. The median household income of Lafayette is estimated to be $34,998 per annum.

Downtown Lafayette and the Ninth Street Historic District are the best places to experience this amazing historic architecture. One of the most remarkable structures is the Tippecanoe County Courthouse. This building is a gem among the city’s asset of beautiful architecture. The Five Points Fire Station was also restored and now serves as a museum. The Prophetstown area is a large place preserved for Native American Heritage, environment and agriculture.
