History:
The area of Lafayette was originally inhabited by Quiatenon Indians. Europeans arrived in the early 18th century and the French constructed a fort in 1717. The fort was primarily used for trading by fur trappers, native Indians and merchants. Lafayette was planned in 1825 by William Digby, and the city was named after the American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette. Wabash River was famous for its shipping activities and brought in a lot of economic opportunity to the city. Later, during the 1840s, the Wabash and Erie Canal was constructed which made the city’s location even more important. By 1850s, Lafayette also had railroads running through it. This made Lafayette an important industrial and trading centre in Indiana.
